SPEAK SOFTLY: Hypocrisy: the plot thickens

SPEAK SOFTLY: Hypocrisy: the plot thickens

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

15 hours ago by Alex Carroll

The presidential race is, for all intents and purposes, a zero-to-zero tie at this point. Hypocrisy and hearsay is everywhere we look, and we need to start back at square one with the issues. Otherwise, this race is going to get offtrack very quickly, and come November, we will not be voting for the right reasons.

THE RIGHT WORD: Governor's visit Friday could help Ball State

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

Ball State football is 1-0, a great start to the season for the Cardinals. However, according to The Star Press, only 22,500 can be held in the seats of Scheumann Stadium. Only 13,068 fans filled the stadium for the Northeastern University game, including 35 percent of the student body, which equates to about 53 percent of the arena (The Star Press).

The perfect VP, except all the imperfections

In the beginning, John McCain made a wise choice for a vice-presidential running mate.

I truly thought Sarah Palin was an excellent choice. I still don't plan on voting for McCain, but I could see the reasons for her selection.

Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin brings the women's vote, as well as the more conservative Republican side of the party.

OUR VIEW: On a pedestal

Just because you're a college student, that doesn't mean you can't have power or influence - nor does it mean you can't find yourself in the public spotlight.

Andrea Watts, one of our Student Government Association senators and Homecoming Queen hopefuls, found herself in a predicament this weekend when she was taken away to the Delaware County Jail after, police said, she was caught drunk in public and began arguing with a Ball State University police officer.

Human beings are creatures of habit. The way we choose to spend our time and things with which we surround ourselves inevitably affect not only who we are, but more importantly, who we will become.

A common American habit consists of getting into the car and flipping on the radio.

Whether to join a fraternity or not is one of the biggest, life-defining decisions a new student can make. That's why it's very important you do not commit to a house until you have given it careful thought, by which I mean "consumed twelve Jell-O shots."

Ha ha, that was a joke.

Column: McCain goes off the bridge to nowhere

The Daily Eastern News, Eastern Illinois University, IL

Over the weekend, we have all been getting acquainted with John McCain's surprise pick for vice president, Sarah Palin - in some cases, more acquainted than many of us would like. Nevertheless, I believe a few choice items do merit repeating. It is worth mentioning that little more than a year and a half ago, Palin was the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska - a tiny hamlet outside of Anchorage with a population of 5,000 people.

Speeches, parties and a 40-year-old humanitarian crisis

BG News, Bowling Green State University, OH

The stories that will dominate this week's news cycle should be fairly predictable to anyone who has followed recent developmets.

Pundits will still be talking about who gave the best speech at the Democratic Convention last week (Dennis Kucinich). They'll ask what mistakes were made in Denver (not allowing former President Jimmy Carter to give a speech on foreign policy and energy).

In 2002, John Malkovich directed "The Dancer Upstairs," which featured the recipient of last year's best supporting actor award Javier Bardem.

Malkovich is now in "Burn After Reading," the new Coen brothers' film.

Malkovich proved he could tell a story while working with actors to give passionate performances, just as he did in his own illustrious acting career.

What Is, Isn't True?

In any election year, leverage is the most important tool for winning an election. From village dogcatcher to President of the United States, candidates love gaining advantages, especially while finding dirt on their opponents.

But how does anyone know what is the truth in these races for public office? What is in the best interest for the general public when information is leaked over choosing the best person for public office?

Almost as soon as Sen.

Do you hate the Greek system? Does the sight of Greek letters make you sick? Do you wish barn-dances were outlawed in the state of Illinois? On Friday, someone who apparently shared this opinion put out an e-mail bashing Greeks on campus, but forged it to make it appear as though it came from Chancellor Richard Herman.

When you're headed to college, and supposing your parents aren't throwing piles of money at you, you don't budget some of your hard-earned money for a run off to the local art auction to bid on some exorbitantly priced Claude Monet original, right?

As many people know, if they are paying attention to politics or social freedom, abortion is a hot topic right now in our society.

We are in a debate about a subject which could never be easy to determine one way or another.

Is abortion right or wrong? Should it be allowed, monitored or denied? Who has the right to decide?

It is very easy to see every side of this argument, but it is sometimes difficult to decipher what is a true opinion and what constitutes an understanding of others' opinions.

People are created equal, but ideas are not. Alchemy, the flat-earth concept, and eugenics come to mind. So does lowering the drinking age to 18. Folks, we've had this discussion before.

The latest reincarnation of this wrong-headed proposal comes from the Amethyst Initiative, which has recruited many college presidents.

When Barack Obama chose Senator Joe Biden he chose a man who is not known to have any vices except of the mouth. The man is a talker, and he talks talks talks and he talks talks talks. Otherwise, he is not known for having any sexual or ethical issues in his closet, as his family is an all-American model from the 1950s and Biden rides the Amtrak train every night to come home to him.
